PAST COLLECTION ITEM Bronze bust of Thomas F. Bayard from 1897 by Euphrosyne ('Effie') StillmanThis is a rare patinated bronze sculpture of Thomas Francis Bayard (1828-1898) who was an American lawyer, politician and diplomat. The sculpture is by Euphrosyne ('Effie') Stillman (British, 1872-1911), and is the daughter of the British Pre-Raphaelite painter Marie Spartali Stillman (1844-1927). It is signed and dated 1897 on the back. The dimensions are 17" high, 9" wide, 7" deep and weigh about 18 lb. Thomas F. Bayard was a Democratic senator from Delaware, 1869-1885; secretary of state under President Grover Cleveland, 1885-1889; US Ambassador at the Court of St James’s, 1893-1897. The Bayards were descendants of French Huguenot refugees, and had been prominent in US public affairs for over 200 years. Thomas F. Bayard’s great-uncle, John Bubenheim Bayard (1738-1807), was speaker of the Pennsylvania assembly in 1777-1778 and at least five members of the family served as senators from Delaware between 1797 and 1929.
